However all up untill today have either hosed my system or not worked. However, today in the Linux Action Show forums oblong sent me a link to something that did work. Check the tread here. Also the information I used is available here. Ok, here is what to do step by step.

1) edit your /etc/apt/sources.list by typing
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

2) change these lines:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty main restricted universe multiverse

To this:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu gutsy main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu gutsy main restricted universe multiverse

then save the file

3) Then run these commands
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get -t gutsy install xserver-xorg-video-intel
(I got some errors but nothing that seemed fatal so I just ignored them)

sudo apt-get -t gutsy install linux

sudo apt-get -t gutsy install libgl1-mesa-dri

4) Go into the System->prefs->Desktop Effects and enable the effects they should just work now NO CRASHING like before... (note I did not try to enable the 3d cube as I only use one workspace)

Hey I have been working on a talkshoe podcast it is located at http://www.mmajumpnow.com. It is not recommended that a person would install this as there primary OS because it still points to the Debian repository's. One interesting feature is that Freespire 2.0 has true transparency out of the box on my machine. This is the first time I have had this even working on my machine let alone right out of the box. It has also been updated to the newest version of KDEdistribution than 1.0.
and feels like it is a much better
technorati tags:freespire, linux, distro, KDE

RAM usage by different os and window managers

I decided to do a test on how much RAM different operating systems and window managers take-up on a computer right after startup. Note that all of these operating systems had fair playing ground because I decided to use them in parallels and not on my actual machine and allocated them all 256 MB of RAM. For my first test I tried Windows XP light. It took up 95 MB of RAM. I decided not to try the original copy of Windows XP because I knew it would take way more RAM than what I was looking for an operating system.

Next I decided I would switch to a Linux operating system. I chose Ubuntu Edgy to do my tests on. With the gnome window manager it use 74 MB of RAM. I was not too impressed with that considering that Windows XP light only took up 95 makes him which is only slightly more than gnome takes up. Bare in mind that in Linux I decided to use the gnome system stats monitor to do all of my recordings of RAM usage. The next window manager I tried was KDE. Not surprisingly it took a more RAM than gnome but less RAM than Windows. It took up a total of 80 MB of RAM.

Afterwards I decided to try some lightweight window managers in Ubuntu to see how much RAM usage they would take up. The first one I tried was XFCE. I suspected it would take up a lot less RAM than it did. Surprisingly it took up a total of 68.1 MB of RAM. Which is only slightly less than amount of RAM gnome took up. I guess I should not be as shocked as I was to find out how much RAM XFCE took considering that it is built on the GTK2 framework. Next I decided to try icewm. It is quite a bit different than the other window managers in Linux. It is a little more difficult to set up however it is very intuitive to use. Icewm stores all the settings in text files that can be edited. It's actually not very hard to use once you get used to it. Icewm also looked like it was straight out of 1995. But that's fine because it came in a minuscule 52.7 MB of RAM which is far superior to any of the other window managers in Linux and its especially better than Windows RAM usage. So there you have it, icewm came in first. XFCE came in second. Gnome came in third. KDE came in forth. Last and certainly least was Windows XP light.

It was hard for me to figure out a fair way to test the boot times in the different operating systems without actually installing each one individually on my machine. I will give you a rough estimate of how fast they were. It's hard for me to test a startup speed between Ubuntu in Windows XP light I actually don't know which one was faster owned boot. My guess would be Ubuntu but only slightly. However within the window managers it was clear that icewm was the fastest and did not require any time to load. Then gnome and XFCE only required a small amount of time and a splash screen. In last was KDE which took a little while at a splash screen.

technorati tags:XFCE, Windows, icewm, KDE, Gnome, lite, XP, window, managers

Edgy Eft Knot3 Released

The Edgy Eft Knot 3 is the third alpha release of Ubuntu 6.10, and with this new alpha release comes a whole host of excellent new features. (A user has to load different repositories to get it to work) The beauty of Freespire is that it incorporates both open source and proprietary. It is the only time I've been able to install a Linux distribution and have my wireless working without ndiswrapper. It also comes with a full verity of media codecs which makes it easy to watch content on my laptop.

It also has other problems besides the gnome install. It boots to slow in my opinion. I tested it with windows and Ubuntu. Both windows and Ubuntu booted much faster on my AMD 64 laptop. At this current time I would not recommend Freespire over Ubuntu to new Linux users but I believe moving forward Freespire could become a very good new Linux user distro.

technorati tags:freespire, linux, ubuntu, trial, problems, computer

Firefox backers aim to 'destroy' Internet Explorer

A group of Firefox users so determined to destroy IE that some sites now "actually block users with IE from viewing the page, informing them they must install Firefox to view the site." I got to see the Linux Link tech show guys which was pretty cool. There were a lot of companies there. I got to see the firetrucks going to the convention center when the Unisys booth went up in smoke(picture from here). That was a site to see. After that most of the day was spent going around to the different booths and getting free t-shirts. One of the more interesting things was the placement of the booths. When you first went into the conference and down the stairs you would see that they placed Intel and AMD very close together. They also placed KDE and GNOME right next to each other in the .org pavilion. I was waiting to see a fight brake out myself.

After going around to the different booths I went upstairs to the geeks vs. nerds competition to see who knows the most. The contestants were from Oracle and My SQL. It was interesting and the nerds ended up winning. After that I attended the birds of a feather session with the Samba developers. It was fascinating to find out what they were looking to do with the Samba project. One of the developers brought up that Samba has to many options that were put in place and that they need to start getting rid of a few of them that were used in systems that aren't needed anymore. He talked about taking them out of the standard build and making them separate.

I wish I had a camara to take pictures but next year I will be able to.

technorati tags: linuxworld, boston, 06, linux, unisys, Samba

StreamCast aka Morpheus sues Skype, KaZaA and many others

Anyone can sue anybody, and a lawsuit does not imply guilt but I've been informed that in documents fled in the U.S. District Court's CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA (Western Division - Los Angeles) CIVIL DOCKET FOR CASE #: 2:06-cv-00391-FMC-E that back on January 20th StreamCast Networks, best known for their Peer to Peer technology, called Morpheus, filed a RICO suit against Skype Technologies SA, Niklas Zennstrom, Janus Friis, BlueMoon OU (the company that reportedly did a lot of the development work on Skype) alleging RICO violations.

There is a new "Web 2.0" project known as Goowy (pronounced gui for technical people). The company offers 2gb of email storage with each account and that is how the project started. It is a project like EyeOS except, to my knowledge, this service is not open source. However it does have a few new features that make it a very viable web based desktop. One of those is that unlike EyeOS the user doesn't have to have their own server or hosting. Goowy does that themselfs.

The picture to the left is of the goowy start page it has the normal login up in the right hand corner.

The desktop really feels well thought out and doesn't remind me of being a web based utility. It was wrote partially in Flash and of course it uses the new "Web 2.0" essentials of DHTML and Ajax.

This screen is the login screen it gives you the ability to choose who to log in as.

The next thing the user will come to is the desktop. One of the neat things is that down below you have Icons, similar to OSX, that when clicked bounce.

The Desktop has many different options for where to go.

Two other interesting features are the widgets and the games.

<-- a widget (shown on the screen shot) is a small application that has a nice interface and is designed to sit on your desktop. There are quite a few widgets for Goowy and most of them really performed well. Some of my favorites is the Del.icio.us widget. Which keeps track of your del.icio.us favorites and the stocks widget. I'm sure a lot of users will like the weather widget. I tested it and it worked flawlessly.<--

-->The other desktop item, games, works well too. The games are all flash based and free. Most were contributed by users, which is always cool. The games selection seems to be pretty good and most of the games are very entertaining. The only problem with the games are that they load in a new window, which forces the user to turn off there pop up blocker for that site. -->

The mail feature and the contacts are two things that go hand and hand.

<--The email feature is one of the best things I've seen so far with this product. It doesn't have the feel of a webmail client. I've been using Gmail for awhile and I'm thinking about switching to this. It seems to have more folder options than gmail and it is much more user friendly than gmail.<--

-->It imported my gmail contacts very quickly and easily. It also will import from yahoo, MSN, or hotmail. The interface has the same slick feel as the email feature.-->

The Goowy calender and settings are fully featured, although the calender is still beta.

<--The calender allows the user to schedule there days and plan out what they are going to do. It seems to be as good as any other day planner I have seen.<--

-->The settings has many different options including: general, personal, folder manager, skins (at this point it seems to just be another word for background image), Alerts, and a spell checker. It even allows the user to upload there own background.-->

My recap and discussion of ZdNets review of Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006

The article discusses Microsoft's Office Small Business Accounting 2006, which is a piece of small business accounting software. It relates to my studies in two ways. First, I have an accounting class where we are learning to use one of its competitor's software, known as Peach Tree. Secondly, I want to become a program designer and the more programs I get to look at, the easier it is to design programs.

The article starts out describing the price of Microsoft's new competitor to Peach Tree and Quick Books Pro. The price of Small Business Accounting 2006 is $179 which is half the list price of Quick Books Pro. However, there is a catch to Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006. The reader would notice the word “Office” in the title which means that the office suet, which has to be purchased separately, is necessary for most of the key features of this product to work. One of those features, as discussed in the article, is the ability to import records from Excel. Small Business Accounting 2006 also has the ability to import data from the 2002, 2003, or 2004 editions of Quick Books Basic or Pro. Accounting 2006 looks like the fusion of the design of the Microsoft products and Quick Books Pro. It even rips off Quick Books flowchart interface.

The lack of features is actually the appeal of Microsoft's Office Small Business Accounting 2006. Microsoft spent most of its design time on this product making it easy to use, and setting up wizards to walk the novice through how to use the program. Again, I would like to discuss the integration of this product with the rest of the office suite. In order to simply put your business logo on your invoice the purchaser has to export the invoice to Word, Microsoft's word processor. There is a way to buy a bundle that comes with the office suet but it costs $669.

Finally, The article rates the program. Microsoft's Office Small Business Accounting 2006 gets an overall 6.7. Small Business Accounting 2006 had individual scores of: a seven for setup and interface, a six for features, and a seven for service and support, which isn't a bad score by ZDnets scale.

My reaction and opinion of this software is that it’s just like the rest of Microsoft's software, overpriced and useless. Why would anyone pay for this software when there are perfectly good free alternatives. I personally run Linux and have a program called Gnucash which is a completely free piece of accounting software. There is also free windows accounting software, although not as good as Gnucash. I have not tested any of them but there names are Ace Money Lite and Wings 2000. Overall I'm not a big fan of Microsoft's software products. They usually seem rushed and lack basic functions that would make the product better. It seems that this product is no different.

My LUG Experience

I, Toby G, have always had a peaceful unchanging life. I had vary few changes in my life before I made a decision that would alter my life forever. That decision was to come here to Pennsylvania College of Technology. The reason it was so drastic is that I would have to leave home and come to a place that seemed foreign to me. I had left my home before but never permanently. When I got here I went through the typical three day orientation. It starts with all of us going out by the campus center on a brisk fall day. We then were grouped in an almost random fashion and assigned to an RA. I then had to hunt around the courtyard to find a number 16 that my RA was holding. When I finally found the number I realized that everyone was standing in a circle around him and so I quickly joined in. My RA started off with “My name is Jim. I'm in architectural design and I like hunting. Now tell us a little about yourself”. I then start to think about what I'm going to say when the circle gets around to me. It gets closer and closer to me and I still have nothing to say. I start to tense up and my hands start to sweet. I then notice that the circle had already gotten to me and I had not yet thought of what to say. Jim belches out “And what is your name”. I meagerly answer “I'm Toby Peters. I'm in Web & Application Design and I like computers”. Thats all I could come up with. “I like computers” is a horrible nerdy thing to say. After that I looked around at who was in the group and realized none of them where going to be anyone I associated with outside of this activity.

I don't have much in common with most people. Growing up I had a few friends but I didn't really connect with any of them. I am the type of geeky kid that would much rather be in front of a computer all day than doing anything else. When I got here to Penn College I expected not to make friends (outside of classes) because I'm the type of person who thinks friends are usually a waste of time. However what ended up happening was quite the opposite. After I got through the orientation I of course forgot all of the people within group 16's names just as I had expected to.

The first couple of weeks go by and just as I had expected I had not made any friends. It's not that I couldn't have, its that I didn't have to. I typically make friends that will somehow help me in my classes but up here that is more difficult because there is an almost zero chance of having the same classmates in several classes.

When I have my headphones on I'm not listening to music as one would expect. I'm listening to something known as podcasts. Podcasts are audio files that can be downloaded to your computer that contain people talking. They are similar to radio shows. Then one day as I'm walking to class with my headphones on I get stopped in the hall by some guy who has blue eyes and a lip ring who hands me a poster. I look down and it says LUG meeting today. At first thought I was thinking “what the heck is LUG”. Then as I read on I realized that LUG meant Linux User Group. I knew what Linux was already because I had used it in the past for a brief amount of time. As I read on the paper explained that Linux is an operating system and it is free. After seeing that there was free pizza at the first meeting I made a decision that I would go, not knowing how it would change my future forever.

The meeting started out with that guy with the blue eyes and lip ring saying what his name was. He was named Evan and he was running for the president position of PCLUG. The PC in PCLUG stands for Penn College. Then he introduces the other people are nominated for positions. He goes through one by one having them come up and give speeches. I didn't think I was going to get involved with the club so I sat back in the corner and day dreamed. I knew I wouldn't remember all of them but I did happen to be paying attention when Evan said “And now the person running for the position of secretary Andrew”. I thought to myself, “That's got to be horrible to be a secretary in any club.” Just the thought of having to take down all of the meeting notes made me want to hurl. When Andrew stepped up to the front of the room I noticed that he was a gaunt, pale, and nerdy type of person and he was exactly what what you would expect from a secretary of a computer club. Andrew seemed to be a skittish type of person who didn't like to talk in front of groups. Unlike the rest of those who had ran for positions he gave an extremely short speech. The only thing he said was “Hi my name is Andrew”.

After the speeches Evan got started on what the Linux User Group offered. He explained “We offer web space with PHP and My SQL...”. I started to doze off and when he was about half way through his speech someone from the peanut gallerie shouts out “I'm a republican” out of nowhere it seemed. I quickly look to see who it is and I was shocked to see that it was our treasurer. The rest of the group doesn't comment on his statement, at least not verbally, and Evan just continued his speech. After Even gave his speech he finally said the words I was waiting to here all meeting “Now you can all have some of the pizza!”. As I'm eating the delicious pizza I had waited all meeting to grab from the box I realize that I might actually like this club and I decide to go back to the second meeting.

Later on that night I start to here my stomach growl and I make the decision to go to eat on campus for the first time. When I get to “The Commons”, an all you can eat buffet on campus, I see Andrew the PCLUG secretary there eating a salad. I decide that I'll sit down and talk to him to find out more about the club and himself. I'm terrified to go up to people I haven't meet and start a conversation. This was actually one of the few times in my life I had done this. I sit down at his table and say “Hi my name is Toby”. He responds with “My name's Andrew”. I tell him that I know and that I was at the meeting. Through different occasions at The Commons and other PCT events I got to know Evan and some of the other prominent members of PCLUG.

The meetings go by and at each one a different topic, each one just as interesting as the last if not more interesting. As the club nears the middle of the semester I notice that we have no promotional advertising and make a decision to ask Evan about it. Evan answers my question with “I don't have the time but if you would like to do that you can start a committee.” I respond with, “Of course I will do that.” The next week I became the official head of the advertising committee. And that was my first LUG experience.

EyeOS

EyeOS is a online Operating System that runs in your browser. There goal is to stop people from copying ps3 disks but this is a bad idea. Sony is going to cause massive problems with compenies like gamesnflix.com and blockbuster. I personally have had problems with Sony in the past. I had Star Wars Galixies accounts back in the day when the game first came out and one day they were gone. I could not get ahold of them because they don't even have a toll free number. I finally called them after a month of not having my accounts, the phone bill was insane and They had scrambled my account data... Lets compare that to Microsoft who I have delt with on many occasions and never had a problem with. They have a toll free number 18004MYXBOX (ms windows has a number two but I don't know it off hand). I also had a launch xbox, one that came out on the first shipment of xbox's from the manufacturer, and they took it back and fixed it two years after the warrinty ran out. I can tell you one thing though I'm not getting a ps3 if they have this DRM technology.

Flock, Ubuntu, My Blog

I finally switched back to Ubuntu from windows xp (3rd attempt to completely make the switch). I had started using windows again because I tried to install my video card drivers and ubuntu went nuts... Last time I used it I even heated Evan's warning and did not install anything from source. This time however, the first thing I had to do was install a program from source. I have started to use the web browser flock. If your like me and like firefox but also want to have blogging, rss feedreader, and syncing with your del.icio.us account in your browser then it might be worth checking out (It is still bata/alpha and if you open a lot of tabs it will become a system hog). The only problem is there are no deb packages for it. I had to compile it from source, which took way longer than it should have cause im an idiot. I'm back to being able to blog in my browser window now though. I've been wanting to do more blog posts but it seems most of the pclug members aren't posting to often and I don't want my name to be on the pclug main page more than once for blog posts. My content isn't as important as most of the other members that blog... there content is more task focused and mine is more focused on what i'm doing.

Wow its been awile

I finally am updating my blog... I have done some changes and am slightley busy lately due to school finals and projects ive been putting off (Cit150...). I have to create a web site and put flash content on it. Im one of the few people who will say this but I hate flash. It doesn't entgrate very well with firefox... and it slows down web pages. (if you want to see the integration problems vew this page in firefox http://home.pct.edu/~pettob94/cit150/6/index.html and then view this page http://home.pct.edu/~pettob94/finishers/tna/tnaajs.html in in firefox the first ones flash content doesn't display but in the second one the content doesn't desplay in IE (and I found out the hard way when one of my friends tried to view the site...), I have to pick a browser to use when I display flash content. I switched over to a browser named flock that is based on firefox and it desplayed both of the videos correctly. I also would start to add content to my site http://www.tobygpeters.com and remove the picture of me from the main page... Its starting to even scare me. I cant get much done till after finals though because I have to do well in them. I dont know what im going to do when I go "home" for the holidays because I will be without a internet connection (actually they have dial up but I can only get online after they go to bed and I have to go upstaires to do that).

I finally got Ubuntu working on my laptop and I can assure you I will never go back to windows. It is so much faster and so much more secure. Unfortunately I have got a broadcom wireless card and its being a b*tch. I can't set it up to auto connect to new wireless access points (I type any or all in the essid field and it just sits and doesn't connect to a wap) and something is messed up in my network settings cause on startup my machine halts at the network part of startup for like 1-2 min.s. Everything else is working for me though. I started off by installing a bunch of stuff and its easy with SPM. I also installed a few of the O_o programs twice and I dont know how that happened. I was also given a title within the Linux Users Group today. I am now the head of advertising committee. With that title I have to make sure I do my best to do as much as I can to make sure PCLUG events get as much advertising as possible. Due to how busy I was Thursday I didn't get to reslife to see about the posters being posted in the dorms but I will be doing that Monday. Im also going to start to learn vim in my free time (when I have some).

Last week in review
(I started this blog on a monday so I decieded to review last week)

I heard lots of stuff thats really importent last week. A bunch of stuff has been anounced but its mostly old news now. I might spin of this section of the blog and just do it in individual posts through the week when I find out something that makes me angry.

Well on to last weeks pclug meeting. The meeting wasn't very interesting or very good just do to the fact that the server wasn't complety up and running (and still isn't to my knowlege). Evan had prepared to do a meeting based on the features of the server and how to use it but that didn't go over to well. We found out that the user accounts were not working correctly.... We really should wait till they are done with the server setup to go over that stuff.

We also had a lan party last friday night from 5 to 12. It was fun but we had a lackluster turn out do to the fact that there was no advertising for it. I think I might have to make a poster today for next weeks due to the fact that we should have a poster submitted soon and noone has stepped up and made one yet (If you read this and want to make one just post it on the wiki and tell evan about it and he'll know what to do from there).

As far as current projects go ive got a bunch. I want to install linux on my labtop (and im getting close I almost have all my anime backed up on dvds). I also have a few websites to design for Cit150. Ive got a bunch of homework that im waiting till the last minute to do. I also want to get swap disks for my ps2. There are other projects two but thoughs are my focus this week.

I have decieded to create this blog... My goals are to update it once a week on sunday with a segment I like to call this week in review. In this I will descuse all things (computer related) that has happened over the week that effects me. I will divide it into several parts. First is the what ive herd this week (through videocasts and podcasts). Second I will descuse the pclug meeting of the week. Third I will descuse my current projects.
